Description
AGOSTINO CARRACCI (1557–1602)
Study of figures with architecture
Pen and brown ink on paper
Dimensions: Height 320 mm – Width 480 mm
The sheet is covered with numerous sketches in pen and brown ink; in the top left-hand corner, an architectural frame (pediment, columns, niche) with a small figure, and several studies of standing figures, either nude or lightly draped, scattered across the sheet.
A grid-marked architectural structure in the top right-hand corner (a perspective or elevation sketch); lines of handwritten text in the bottom left-hand corner, in Old Italian, probably corresponding to the inscription mentioned in the catalogue entry (“(...) me Agostino (...)”). The sheet has a vertical centre fold and water stains/foxing typical of old paper.
Front and back: pen and brown ink on paper, featuring studies of figures and architectural perspectives, on the reverse of an engraving of the Holy Family with Saint John the Baptist, Saint Catherine and Saint Anthony the Abbot.
Height 320 mm x Width 480 mm
The attribution of the pen-and-ink studies is supported by an inscription on the reverse, in which the artist identifies himself as ‘(...) me Agostino (...)’.
