Description
VENICE, 18th CENTURY A very rare tear-shaped vessel Barrel-shaped, made of free-blown and drawn glass, translucent with a slight smoky tinge, featuring a spiral ribbed pattern created by pinching and enhanced by three applied blue glass fillets attached with pliers, two of which are embossed with a wolf’s-tooth pattern, encircling the body at regular intervals. The base is encircled by a matching blue fluted band. Dimensions: 14 x 6.5 cm This shape, known as a ‘tear-shaped’ or ‘weeping’ vessel, was traditionally intended, according to popular tradition, to collect tears; it forms part of the tradition of 18th-century Murano/Venetian glassworks, known for their blown vials with applied fillets and their free-form shapes created on the wheel, without a mould.
