Description
BOLOGNESE SCHOOL, CIRCLE OF LUDOVICO CARRACCI (1555–1619)
The Vision of Saint Hyacinth
Oil on re-stretched canvas.
Dimensions: 115 x 86.5 cm
This powerful painting bears witness to the transitional phase in Bolognese painting between the 16th and 17th centuries, from late Mannerism towards a more vivid and expressive naturalism, in which Annibale and Ludovico Carracci were the leading figures.
The composition bears a striking resemblance to Ludovico Carracci’s famous masterpiece on the same subject, held at the Louvre Museum – the vision experienced by Saint Hyacinth, of Polish origin, in which the Virgin Mary asked him to bring her statue to safety during the Tartar attack on Kiev, in exchange for her protection.
