Description
JEAN BOULANGER (1606–1660), attributed Fresco in the Galleria di Bacco, measuring 2.60 × 6 metres A very large fresco, a mural mounted on three frames, bearing a strong resemblance to the frescoes in the sumptuous decorative cycle of the Galleria di Bacco (Gallery of Bacchus) located in the Palazzo Ducale in Sassuolo, in Emilia-Romagna (Italy). Created between 1650 and 1652, this ensemble of frescoes and tempera paintings is regarded as the artist’s absolute masterpiece. The fresco forms part of a vast programme narrating the life, triumphs and myths associated with Bacchus (Dionysus). The scene depicts a mythological procession linked to Bacchus’s travels, featuring a peasant guiding a pair of oxen harnessed to a rustic cart. The trompe-l’œil technique is faithful to the great tradition of Italian Baroque, with the composition set within a superb illusionist border of faux stucco and architectural volutes (quadratura), framing the scene in the manner of a hanging painting. Restored. Dimensions: 260 x 600 cm Provenance: Collection of Guido Sermenghi (1924–2011), then passed down through the family, Menton.
