A Flemish painter of the Antwerp School; renowned for his floral and fruit still lifes, active in Antwerp and The Hague, Gaspar Verbruggen also collaborated with other artists, combining figures with still-life elements. Trained from a very young age by his father, he became a master of the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp in 1677–1678, at the age of just 13.
His style was notably inspired by the Italian artists Mario Nuzzi and Michele Pace del Campidoglio, although the work of the French painter Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer also influenced him. His works represent a shift towards a more decorative style in late 17th-century Flemish still life.
