Description
CHIURAZZI FOUNDRY, NAPLES (19th–20th CENTURY)
A very significant sculpture of Hermes seated on a rock (125 x 115 cm)
Large bronze model with a nuanced grey patina, resting on a marble rock base. Exceptional workmanship, bearing the Chiurazzi Foundry mark on the reverse.
Dimensions: approx. 125 x 115 x 75 cm, very heavy.
This piece is a reproduction of the extraordinary statue discovered during the excavations of the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum in 1758 and now housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. It depicts Hermes (Mercury to the Romans), the god of travellers and merchants, at rest. Experts agree that this is a 1st-century CE Roman copy based on a Greek bronze from the 3rd century BC.
