Description
FLEMISH OR GERMANIC SCHOOL, LATE 16TH CENTURY
‘The War of the Birds and the Quadrupeds’ (Aesop’s fable)
Chiselled print, an illustration probably taken from an edition of Aesop’s Fables or a collection of emblems. Wear and foxing.
Dimensions: 27.3 x 20.5 cm
In a landscape dominated by a rock, the eagle, leader of the birds, swoops down on the army of four-legged beasts led by the lion, whilst the griffin, cockerel, waders and birds of prey face off against the bull, horse, donkey, camel and wolf. Above the fray, the bat—half-bird, half-beast—waits to see which side will prevail: the moral of the fable condemns the opportunism of those who change sides according to circumstances.
