Description
JAN VAN DER STRAET, known as STRADANUS (1523–1605) This plate forms part of the famous series ‘Venationes Ferarum, Avium, Piscium’, published in Antwerp by Philippe Galle in the late 16th century (c. 1578–1580). The scene depicts the capture of an enormous serpent (dragon) native to India, which lives hidden in the waters and is ravenous; it emerges from its hiding place to attack a herd suspended from a shady tree; it is finally subdued with clubs and by fire, as described in the Latin text at the bottom of the plate: “Ingentem vegeto Serpentem corpore gignit / India, qui solitus latitare in aquis, fame pressus / Prodit, & umbrosa dependens arbore, saltu / Apprendit pecus: ast clavis flammaque necatur.” C. De Mallery sculpt. Dimensions: 25 x 30.4 cm
