Description
ALBRECHT DÜRER (1471–1528)
Saint Sebastian
Copperplate engraving (burin), on slightly browned antique paper, depicting Saint Sebastian tied to a tree, his hands bound above his head, his body pierced by several arrows, his head bowed, his curly hair and beard rendered in fine cross-hatching. A cartouche attached to a branch, in the bottom right-hand corner, bears the monogram ‘AD’.
This composition, set in an antique frame and cropped to fit the frame, reproduces Albrecht Dürer’s famous engraving ‘Saint Sebastian Tied to the Tree ’ (c. 1501), listed in the catalogues raisonnés under the references Bartsch 55 / Meder 62 / Schoch-Mende-Scherbaum 30, with contemporary prints held, notably, at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and the Baltimore Museum of Art.
Dimensions: 11.5 x 6.7 cm
