Description
CIRCLE OF ANTOINE VAN DYCK (1599–1641)
Portrait of the artist Cornelis Schut
Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 30 x 25 cm
Provenance: Bertolami, Rome
In the top right-hand corner of the painting are a coat of arms and a barely legible inscription: ‘CORNELIS SCHUT / (...) FIGURAE / (...) ANTWERPAE / AETATIS SUAE 46’.
Thanks to this inscription on the canvas and to the engraving produced by Lucas Vorsterman around 1645 after a drawing by Antoine Van Dyck, this painting can be identified as a portrait of the painter Cornelis Schut (Antwerp, 1597–1655), a pupil of Rubens. The painting faithfully reproduces the engraving, with the exception of a reduction in its lower section.
