Description
PRAGUE SCHOOL, RUDOLFINE, EARLY 17TH CENTURY A pair of large Baroque allegorical vanities An important pair of very large oil paintings on canvas Dimensions: 158 x 106 cm These complex Mannerist compositions, allegorical and richly symbolic, form part of the rich artistic context surrounding the court of Emperor Rudolf II (late 16th–early 17th century). The Prague School, which flourished under the patronage of Emperor Rudolf II (reigned 1576–1612), brought together artists from across Europe (Bartholomeus Spranger, Hans von Aachen, Joseph Heintz the Elder, etc.) in a late Mannerist style characterised by complex allegorical compositions, a penchant for symbolic accumulation and technical virtuosity in the rendering of materials (metal, fabric, flesh), all elements that can be seen in this Vanitas, such as the gleaming armour or the angel’s pink drapery, and the putto’s flesh tones.
