A central figure in Florentine Baroque painting, Carlo Dolci created some of the most intense and moving devotional images of the 17th century. His depictions of the Virgin, characterised by incomparable spirituality and refinement, were celebrated during his lifetime and collected by Europe’s greatest patrons.
The quality of the modelling of the flesh tones, the subtlety of the rendering of the fabrics and the spiritual depth of the expression place this work amongst the most refined examples of his school.
