Description
FRANCESCO TREVISANI (1656–1746), attributed Saint Sebastian being tended to by Saint Irene. Oil on canvas Dimensions: 82 x 58 cm - An Italian history painter born in Capo d’Istria and who died in Rome, he produced religious compositions, mythological subjects and portraits, having learnt the basics of drawing from his father. He subsequently studied under Antonio Zanchi (1631–1722) in Venice and Carlo Maratti (1625–1713) in Rome. Under the patronage of Cardinal Chigi, he was employed by Pope Clement XI, who commissioned him to paint the dome of Urbino Cathedral, as well as one of the prophets adorning St John Lateran. The Duke of Modena also commissioned him to produce copies after Correggio and Mazuola. He was, without a doubt, the most sought-after painter of his time, judging by the numerous commissions he received, both in Rome and abroad. He imbued his canvases with an idyllic and secular Arcadian style, which was not without influence – in France, for example – on painters such as Lemoyne and Carle Van Loo.
