An Italian Rococo painter active in Venice, son of Domenico Guardi and brother of Francesco and Niccolò, he began his training in his father’s workshop before furthering his studies at the school of Pittoni. On his father’s death, he took over the running of the workshop and worked on religious paintings in collaboration with his brothers.
After producing a series of portrait copies at the request of an Austrian collector, he was admitted as a figure painter to the Academy of Venice thanks to the intervention of his brother-in-law, Giambattista Tiepolo. His style, characterised by decorative effects, reveals the influence of Giovanni Battista Piazzetta in its luminous colours and that of Sebastiano Ricci in its delicate line work.
