An Italian Baroque painter born in Milan, initially trained by his uncle Antonio Volpino, Ghisolfi moved to Rome in 1650 with his artist friend Antonio Busca to study under Salvatore Rosa, where he had the opportunity to become acquainted with the work of Pietro da Cortona. There he produced vedute – landscapes featuring the ruins of ancient Rome – which were highly prized by his contemporaries. On his return to Lombardy in 1661, he painted frescoes in a chapel at the Carthusian monastery in Pavia; then, in 1664, he was commissioned to go to Vicenza to paint a series of decorative landscape frescoes in the Trissino and Giustiniani Baggio palaces.
