Description
JOHANN HEINRICH SCHÖNFELD (1609–1684), circle The Massacre of the Innocents Oil on canvas presenting a dramatic and lively composition depicting the biblical episode from the Gospel according to Saint Matthew, in which King Herod orders the killing of all children under the age of two in Bethlehem. The work is structured in the manner of an ancient theatrical frieze across several planes. The use of stark contrasts of light, the warm colour palette punctuated by touches of Naples blue and Naples yellow, and the poignant expressiveness of the faces are all fully in keeping with the mid-17th-century Neapolitan Baroque tradition, which was strongly influenced by Caravaggism and Roman Classicism. Dimensions: 73 x 97 cm
