Description
CAMILLE COROT (1796–1875), attributed Fishermen and Washerwomen in front of the Rotto Bridge and Tiber Island in Rome Oil on paper mounted on canvas, in a carved wooden frame. Original label on the reverse. Dimensions: 27 x 43 cm This luminous Roman veduta follows in the tradition of 19th-century French travel painters; another composition by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot was painted during his first trip to Italy (1825–1828). The work depicts the remains of the Ponte Aemilius (known as the Ponte Rotto), destroyed by the flooding of the Tiber, set against the backdrop of Tiber Island and the architecture of the Eternal City. In the foreground, the bustle of the riverbanks is rendered through small figures sketched from life – a man fishing with a rod, a washerwoman and people resting – lending a picturesque touch to this historic landscape. The artist subtly captures the golden light of a late Roman afternoon, the transparency of the water and the azure hues of a clear sky – characteristics typical of pre-Impressionist studies of the subject.
