Born in Milan to an English father and a Florentine mother, Ashton studied at the Brera Academy under Gaetano Fasanotti and Luigi Riccardi, before furthering his training in Switzerland with the renowned Alpine landscape painter Alexandre Calame.
Nicknamed “the mountain painter”, he devoted himself mainly to Alpine landscapes (Ossola, Switzerland, Monte Rosa), in a naturalistic style tempered by a romantic sensibility inherited from Calame. He lived in Rome from 1872 to 1880, then settled on the shores of Lake Maggiore (Pallanza), where he ran a painting school, before making Domodossola his permanent home.
