A French painter born Marie Élisabeth Marthe Koch in Lyon in 1862, Marthe Elisabeth Barbaud specialised in flower painting and was associated with the Lyon School. She studied under Sophie Olivier, Loubet, Bouguereau and Élie Laurent, but it was chiefly under Jules Ferdinand Médard (1855–1925) that she developed her technique for painting flowers.
