Description
LUCIE COUSTURIER (1876–1925), attributed Bouquet of zinnias and chrysanthemums Oil on canvas mounted on panel Dimensions: 46 x 38 cm In the tradition of the great chromatic achievements of Neo-Impressionism, this significant floral still life demonstrates a perfect mastery of the principles of the Pointillist movement – that revolution in artistic vision initiated by Georges Seurat and Paul Signac and brought to full maturity by a generation of painters enamoured of light and pure colour. A generous bouquet of zinnias and chrysanthemums in colours—fiery oranges, deep reds, mauves and purples, and luminous whites—blooms in a cylindrical blue vase set upon a carpet with multicoloured sheens. Each flower is rendered with remarkable freedom and spontaneity, the fragmented brushstrokes capturing the luminous vibrancy of the petals with great accuracy. The background, rendered in swirling brushstrokes of white, green and yellow, evokes a diffused light that envelops the composition in a luminous and airy atmosphere. The red carpet in the foreground, rendered as a mosaic of rich, small coloured brushstrokes, firmly anchors the composition in the tradition of Divisionism, where each hue is built up through the juxtaposition of pure colours rather than by mixing.
