View of Beaulieu-sur-Mer, 1902
Watercolour on paper, signed ‘L. Flamant’, dated and localised in the lower left-hand corner
Dimensions of the image: 24.5 x 36 cm
This is probably the headland on which Villa Kérylos was built between 1902 and 1908 in Beaulieu-sur-Mer. It was commissioned by the Hellenist and archaeologist Théodore Reinach and designed by the architect Emmanuel Pontremoli. A faithful reconstruction of an ancient Greek residence, it is now listed as a Historic Monument and has belonged to the Institut de France since 1928.
This detail is particularly interesting in relation to this watercolour, as it is dated 1902, the painter Flameng was in Beaulieu-sur-Mer at precisely the time when the Villa Kérylos was first being built, making it a visual record of a pivotal era for this seaside resort, which was then booming and very popular with the European aristocracy and artists.
