A Belgian painter born in Ghent, brother of Xavier De Cock, and a pupil of Charles-François Daubigny and François-Louis Français, César De Cock worked in France and was a member of the Barbizon School. He actually stayed at the Auberge Ganne between 1859 and 1861 before settling in Gasny, in the Eure department. Closely associated with Corot, he painted numerous landscapes whilst maintaining a commitment to classical composition and a vision that gradually came to resemble that of the Impressionists.
César De Cock went on to influence many painters, notably Vincent van Gogh, who explicitly mentions him in his letters to his brother Theo.
