Description
GEORGES HENRI MANZANA-PISSARRO (1871–1961) Château-Gaillard seen from the Seine, at Les Andelys Pencil (charcoal or graphite) on paper, signed lower left. Dimensions: 24 x 32 cm A view of the Seine at Les Andelys (Eure, Normandy), depicting a row of bare trees at the water’s edge, with, on the wooded hill in the background, the silhouette of the ruins of Château-Gaillard, a medieval fortress built by Richard the Lionheart (1196–1198), overlooking the Seine valley. A drawing executed with great atmospheric sensitivity, playing on shades of grey to suggest the Normandy mist, in the landscape tradition inherited from his father, Camille Pissarro. Manzana-Pissarro stayed regularly at Les Andelys in the 1920s and 1930s, a location he depicted on several occasions (notable works include ‘La Plage aux Andelys’, oil on cardboard, c. 1930, and ‘Mist and Morning Sun – The Seine at Les Andelys’, late 1920s). Château-Gaillard, the site’s landmark, has attracted numerous painters since the late 19th century due to the beauty of its natural setting. Provenance: Félix Pissaro, Menton, and the private collection of Jean Eugène Guillaud, Monaco
