Description
THE CIRCLE OR STUDIO OF PIERRE AUGUSTE RENOIR (1841–1919) The Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Protection at Haut-de-Cagnes Sketch, oil on cardboard panel. This dynamic bird’s-eye view captures the famous Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Protection, nestled along a sloping, cobbled lane in the old fortified village. The religious building is distinguished by its light-coloured façade, its characteristic canopy sheltering the entrance, and its arcaded bell tower topped by a triangular pediment housing a bell. In the background, the sun-gilded Roman-style tiled roofs contrast with the surrounding vegetation. The brushwork is choppy, textured and vibrant, characteristic of Impressionist studies and of Renoir’s own works, which sought to capture the shifting effects of shadow and low-angled light on the old Provençal stones. Dimensions: 33 x 25 cm.
