The Row of Cypress Trees and View of Château Grimaldi at Haut-de-Cagnes
Sketch, oil on canvas mounted on board. This plein air study in landscape format offers a framed view of the historic village. On the left, a dense cluster of tall, tapered cypresses with a dark, vertical silhouette structures the composition and creates a striking contrast with the brightness of the sky. In the centre and on the right, a row of trees set lower down guides the eye towards the background. There, bathed in the soft, golden light of late afternoon, the fortified mass of Château Grimaldi and its tower stands out against the hillside, surrounded by the pale façades of the houses in Haut-de-Cagnes.
