Large Bouquet of Roses in a Vase
Sketch, oil on cardboard. This beautiful still life features a generous bouquet of fully blooming roses spilling out of a decorated earthenware vase. At the base of the vase, resting directly on the wooden mantelpiece, further cut roses and their foliage complete the composition. The dark background, painted with impasto brushstrokes in shades of purple, wine red and brown, masterfully brings out the satiny texture and velvety sheen of the petals. Condition: As is. Unsigned study. Clearly visible studio pin holes in the upper corners. Slight rubbing and minute losses of material at the corners and along the peripheral border due to handling; a significant tear.
