A Franco-Belgian ceramist born in Douai, he trained during the Art Nouveau period. Charles Catteau believed that art should be accessible to all and that it should enhance everyday life. He was one of the great Art Deco designers, and certainly one of the greatest ceramicists working in that style. He promoted this style at the École Industrielle Supérieure de Louvière, training most of the designers who went on to work in the glassworks of the Centre region, such as Paul Bernard, Henri Heemskerk, Paul Heller, Robert Hofman and Léon Mairesse.
