Description
FRANCE, BELLE ÉPOQUE, c. 1900 "France Toujours" A large sculpture in white statuary marble depicting a young female figure, portrayed nude and standing, holding a lion’s head in her right arm, the skin draping down to her feet. Circular plinth bearing the inscription “France Toujours”; likely a unique piece. Dimensions: height 75 cm This sculpture, with its title ‘FRANCE TOUJOURS’ engraved on the plinth, was inspired by the revanchist movement following France’s defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71. This defeat saw Alsace and Lorraine pass into German hands. Paul Déroulède (1846–1914) founded the ‘Ligue des Patriotes’ in 1882, and his revanchist stance made him a key figure in the nationalist right in France. This sculpture depicts France as an elegant, standing figure, proud and triumphant.
