Description
SET OF ANTIQUE TOKENS The coin inscribed ‘MINOR EST QUAE FULMINA GESTAT, 1655’ featuring a winged Pegasus dates from the reign of Louis XIV (1643–1715). In 1655, the young king was only 17 years old and had not yet personally assumed power (he would do so in 1661). The catalogues of the Royal Mint from this period document numerous tokens and medals relating to events of 1654–1656. The motto ‘MINOR EST QUAE FULMINA GESTAT’ is a Latin phrase roughly translating as ‘Small is she/he who bears the thunderbolt’. A seal and three other coins are included.
