Description
After CHARLES FICHOT (Troyes, 1817 – Paris, 1903) Paris, 1867: panoramic view of the Great Exhibition and the capital Woodcut, supplement to the Illustrated London News, London, 6 July 1867, titled in the lower margin ‘PARIS 1867’, inscribed at the top ‘supplement to the Illustrated London News, 6 July 1867’. Signed (?) on the print in the bottom left-hand corner: Ch. Fichot. Heavy wear and foxing. Framed under glass. Dimensions: 125.5 x 51.5 cm Published in the height of summer 1867, whilst the Great Exhibition was drawing millions of visitors to Paris, this monumental view captures in a single glance the capital transformed by the Second Empire. In the foreground, the vast oval palace of iron and glass erected on the Champ-de-Mars, surrounded by the park’s picturesque pavilions, epitomises the ambition of this celebration of industrial progress. Beyond it lie the Seine and the monuments of Paris, from the Arc de Triomphe to Montmartre and from the dome of Les Invalides to the Panthéon. Thanks to its size and the richness of its detail, this print ranks amongst the most spectacular images of the 1867 Exhibition.
