A French painter, as well as a watercolourist, draughtsman and engraver, he studied in Paris under Puvis de Chavannes and Roll. He made his debut at the 1889 Salon and settled in Brittany, where he painted the landscapes that would bring him to the attention of the general public. He travelled to Algeria in 1892 and to Egypt in 1896, which had a considerable influence on his work. His favourite subjects were landscapes, seascapes and portraits.
