Description
NTOMO SOCIETY, BAMANA PEOPLE, MALI, EARLY 20TH CENTURY
Large zoomorphic Suruku mask (hyena)
Carved from wood with a stylised human face, eyes inlaid with a light-coloured material, a straight nose, a slightly parted mouth, flanked by pointed lateral appendages. Topped by a superstructure depicting a stylised animal with a long, curved neck. Dark brown patina from wear.
Dimensions: 67 x 18 cm
This type of mask is associated with the initiation ceremonies for young boys in the Ntomo (n’domo) society amongst the Bambara (Bamana), a people of the Mande group settled in the central and southern regions of Mali. These rites, shared with certain Malinké neighbours, precede entry into the Komo society, the most respected association governing community life.
