An Italian portrait painter born in Livorno, he began his artistic studies in Livorno and continued them at the Academy of Drawing in Florence under Enrico Pollastrini. He honed his skills in Naples in the studio of Domenico Morelli, becoming one of his finest pupils; Morelli’s style, strongly characterised by formal experimentation and literary references – notably the works of Byron – exerted a great influence on the young Vittorio Matteo.
In 1880, Corcos spent time in Paris, where he signed a contract with Goupil, a gallery owner and art dealer—whose business was managed at that time by Van Gogh—and regularly frequented the studio of Léon Bonnat, the portraitist to the Prime Ministers. He then turned towards a style of painting similar to that of his compatriots, characterised by a formal grandeur inspired by contemporary photographic experiments, and he produced, above all, incisive portraits of elegantly dressed women and genre scenes, characterised by a fluid brushstroke and brilliant colours.
In 1904, by which time he was a renowned painter, Corcos painted portraits in Germany of Wilhelm II, his wife and numerous German dignitaries. Margaret of Savoy, wife of Humbert I of Italy, and Amélie of Orléans, the last Queen of Portugal, were among the other crowned heads immortalised by Vittorio Matteo Corcos. His self-portrait was accepted in 1913 into the collection of self-portraits in the Vasari Corridor at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
