Description
OTTOMAN ART, LATE 18TH–EARLY 19TH CENTURY Scribe’s set, Divit (or Galamdan) A case for reed pens with an attached inkwell (without a lid), made of chiselled copper and bronze alloy, richly decorated with engraved foliage and stylised floral motifs running the full length of the body. Dimensions: Length 21.5 cm The divit was the essential tool of the scribe (kâtib) in the Ottoman world; it was often worn at the belt or tucked into a scarf, it combined a penholder and inkwell in a single functional object that also served as a symbol of its owner’s social status (civil servants, calligraphers, literate merchants). The finest pieces, such as this one, judging by the quality of the engraving, were produced in the major Ottoman craft centres (Cairo, Damascus, Istanbul).
