Description
19TH-CENTURY MARITIME FOLK ART
Pair of ‘Scrimshaws’
A set of two scrimshaws carved from bone and engraved in black ink, commemorating the epic history of American whalers. One is oblong and curved, featuring on the obverse a lively maritime scene—‘the three-masted whaler Whaler Lion’—rendered in ink near an exotic coastline dotted with tall palm trees, with two sailors’ longboats at sea; the second, cylindrical in shape, is adorned on one side with a banner-style cartouche bearing the engraved inscription ‘Whaler Lion’ surmounting a lavish basket overflowing with fruit, flowers and stylised palm fronds. Crafted by a whaler’s deckhand.
Dimensions: 15 and 8.5 cm
