His real name was Louis Ernest Fortuné Andrieux; he adopted the pseudonym ‘Fortuney’. A student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse and a friend of Rodin, he painted with him in the south of France, at Cagnes-sur-Mer. He was a master of the pastel technique, which was very much in vogue during the Belle Époque, and excelled at rendering the velvety texture of fabrics and skin tones. A figurative painter with affinities to Expressionism and Fauvism, he produced numerous genre scenes depicting elegant women in the streets of Paris before turning his attention to Mediterranean landscapes and the Estérel.
