Giuseppe Antonio GUATTANI (1748–1830) Rome, Stamperia Pagliarini, 1805. 2nd edition. Complete work in two volumes. 24 x 17.4 cm. Page numbers: (4), 124; (4), 150. Half-leather bindings with gilt titles and ornamentation on the spine. Marbled covers, showing slight scuffs. Illustrated frontispiece, with a cut-out plate mounted on the half-title page, engraved by Rastaini and depicting Artemis after a bas-relief from the Villa Albani. In addition to the frontispiece, the first volume contains a large-format (folded) illustrative map of ancient Rome and 27 plates, three of which are large-format. The second volume contains 30 plates, five of which are large-format, some of which are out of sequence. The plates are the work of Rastaini, Mori, Silvestrini and Muchetti. This is one of the major — richly illustrated — works by the archaeologist and scholar Giuseppe Maria Guattani (Rome, 1748–1830), son of a famous doctor. An eclectic figure, he served as permanent secretary of the Academy of Fine Arts and the Academy of Archaeology (now the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca).
