Description
VIETNAM, 19th–20th centuries.
A seated Buddha on a lotus-shaped pedestal with finely carved petals. His eyes are almost closed and his hands are clasped upon his thighs, conveying a state of meditation. The round face, with long ‘ears of wisdom’, is framed by stylised curls ending in points from which the ushnisha emerges. The monastic robe and cloak fall in soft folds over the crossed legs. The pedestal is movable, allowing the Buddha to be rotated. Wood lacquered in copper and red. Height: 100 cm, length: 52 cm, depth: 45 cm. Lack of lacquer, cracks, chips. As is. Provenance: a collection in Burgundy.
