Description
SOUTH INDIA, second half of the 20th century. Carved stele of Shiva Nataraja (Lord of Dance). Wood with traces of a bullet hole on the face. Dimensions: 98 × 41 cm. Cracks. One finger missing. As is. Note: Through his cosmic dance, Shiva maintains the balance of the universe through the eternal cycle of creation, destruction and rebirth. Balancing on one foot, he triumphs over ignorance and arrogance by crushing, with his other foot, the dwarf demon who embodies these failings. Indeed, enlightenment can only be attained by eradicating the ego, which is the source of spiritual blindness.
