Description
GUADELOUPE. - MOUTON (Louis-Barthélemy-Martin). Autograph manuscript signed (signature on one of the last leaves), entitled "Journal d'affaires particul[ières]". Marseille, 1819-1823 and 1831. Approximately 90 pp. in a paperback notebook with green paper cover. REGISTER OF LETTERS AND DOCUMENTS WRITTEN OR RECEIVED BY LIEUTENANT-COLONEL MOUTON. Having served in the army since 1795, he became aide-de-camp on the staff of General Jean Ernouf in Guadeloupe, and was promoted to battalion commander in 1810, shortly before being taken prisoner of war by the English. Returning to France in 1819, he was posted again to Guadeloupe as a member of Admiral Jean-Julien Angot Des Rotours' staff. He remained there from 1826 to 1829, and then returned to France for good. The letters and documents recorded here are of two kinds: some concern his military situation, in particular his requests to the ministries for postings, first to Marseilles and then to the West Indies, with summaries of his service record. The others, which are more numerous, are of a private nature, generally accounting, and concern in particular EXCHANGES OF GOODS BETWEEN METROPOLE AND THE ANTILLES (where his wife and daughter Ambroisine were still living): he mentions the nature of the goods received in Marseille (RHUM, SUGAR, TAFIA, etc.) or sent to the Antilles (mainly wine), the names of the boats used, but also the people to whom several of the colonial goods were resold in France with their prices. It should be noted that Louis-Barthélemy-Martin Mouton mentions Colonel Aimé MADIER DE LA MARTINE, who commanded the SAINTES (archipelago to the south of Guadeloupe), who had to surrender to the English in 1809, but who had retained property on the island. From 1823 to 1825, another hand, probably that of his daughter Ambroisine in France, collected accounting notes in the present manuscript.
