Description
MARGARITA OF AUSTRIA. Letter signed "Margarita", in Italian, to cardinal Filippo Guastavillani. L'Aquila (Italy), 9 May 1584. 2 pp. folio, address on back, armorial wax seal under paper.
After flattering the cardinal at length and assuring him of her best wishes and offers of service, she asks for his favour by informing him that she is facing legal proceedings at the ecclesiastical tribunal of the Rota in Rome:
"... il dottor Joseffe Rustici, che invio costi ad assistere per me a qu[e]lle mie liti che tengo in Ruota, nelle quale mi vedo molto travagliata per il favore dei Franzesi, che per ogni via diretta et indiretta cercano di prevalere. I trust that at the end the truth will prevail and my good will will be known, for which I promise that V[ostra] S[ignoria] I[llustrissi]ma in ogni occ[asio]ne si adoprerà, concedendomi il suo favore...".
Translation: "... Doctor Giuseppe Rustici, whom I am sending here to attend for me the trials I am having at the Rota, in which I see myself tormented because of the French who, by every direct or indirect means, are trying to prevail. However, I trust that in the end reason will prevail and that my good right will be recognised, to which I flatter myself that Your Illustrious Lordship will make every effort, granting me his favour...".
An influential cardinal, Filippo Guastavillani (1541-1587) was the nephew of Gregory XIII (Pope from 1572 to 1585),
a few days after this letter, he would be appointed camerlingue, one of the most important positions in the Roman Curia.
