MAUVILLON (Éléazar de). Histoire de Pierre I. surnommé le Grand, empereur de toutes les Russies. King of Siberia, Casan, Astracan, Grand Duke of Muscovy, &c. &c. &c. Amsterdam and Leipzig: Arkstée and Merkus, 1742. In-4, (10 of which the 2nd blank)-492 pp. with title printed in red and black, marbled brown calf, spine ribbed with partitions and fleurons, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, filleted edges, red edges; binding rubbed with worn headpieces and corners, some marginal spotting (contemporary binding).
ORIGINAL EDITION OF THIS LIFE OF PIERRE THE GREAT (1672-1725), one of Russia's greatest tsars.
ILLUSTRATION OF 35 ENGRAVED COMPOSITIONS ON COPPER, namely: 5 out of text (a portrait-frontispiece, 4 maps and plans including one of the battle of Poltava), and 30 in the text (including 27 representations of medals relating to the reign of Peter I).
HISTORIAN, PHILOLOGIST, TRANSLATOR, ÉLEAZAR DE MAUVILLON (1712-1779) was initially a Lutheran pastor in Tarascon but had to leave France and move to Germany: private secretary to Elector Augustus of Saxony, who became King of Poland (died in 1733), he was then tutor in Leipzig, professor at the university of that city, and finally professor at the Collegium Carolinum in Brunswick. He published a number of works, including the present history, treatises on philology, a sequel to Abbé Prévost's Mémoires et aventures d'un homme de qualité, and masonic discourses.
