Description
PHILIPPE DE PRETOT (Étienne-André). The Revolutions of the Universe. [Probably 1760s]. Large folio, half-basin with ornate ribbed spine, garnet-red title page, red edges (modern binding in the style of the period).
HISTORICAL ATLAS covering the period from Antiquity to the eighteenth century, from Spain to Japan, and from Northern Europe to Central Africa. It includes printed parts and prints:
- Printed leaves: a title with the address Paris, s.n., 1758, this date being covered by a copper-engraved collet "chez Lattré rue St-Jacques à la ville de Bordeaux"; 30 notices on oblong half-folio leaves mounted in the margin of the corresponding maps, the last leaf bearing the address Paris, imprimerie de H. L. Guérin & L. F. Delatour, 1763. It should be noted that the same text was published in a separate in-12 edition in 1763 by the same printers under the title Les Révolutions de l'univers; ou Remarques et observations sur une carte géographique destinée à l'étude de l'histoire générale.
- Prints: 30 folding copper-engraved plates by Michel Picaud, enhanced with colour, mounted in double .double folding page on tab. This is in fact the same map, dated 1763, entitled "Carte pour l'histoire générale où se peuvent représenter toutes les révolutions de l'univers depuis les plus anciennes monarchies jusqu'à celles qui subsistent à présent". Only the colour highlights vary to indicate the successive changes in the borders of the states.
