Description
BINDING WITH THE ARMS OF THE MARQUISE DE MONTESSON. - BERARD (Jean-Antoine). L'Art du chant, dedicated to Madame de Pompadour. Paris, Dessaint & Saillant, Prault fils, Lambert, and the usual addresses for music, 1755. In-8, (16 of which the 2nd blank)-158-(8) pp, red morocco, smooth spine cloisonné and fleuronné with brown title-piece, triple gilt fillet framing the boards with gilt fleurons at the corners and in the spandrels, gilt coat of arms in the centre of the boards, filleted edges, inner gilt roulette, gilt edges; a few ink stains on a double page of music (contemporary binding).
FIRST EDITION. Copper-engraved illustrations outside the text: an anatomical plate (respiratory system), 17 pages of engraved plates of notated music (paginated 1 to 34), excerpts from famous works including operas by Jean-Philippe Rameau.
"LE PREMIER OUVRAGE QUI AIT ETE FAIT SUR L'ART DU CHANT" (THE FIRST WORK THAT HAS BEEN DONE ON THE ART OF SINGING), according to Jean-Antoine Berard (dedication), which deals comprehensively with the voice, pronunciation, and the perfection of singing (pitch, cadence, accentuation, with descriptions of the various techniques).
THE WORK IS DEDICATED TO MADAME DE POMPADOUR, to whom he pays this compliment in his preface: "I am afraid I have no merit in offering it to you: the protection you declare you give to all the arts would be enough to encourage all those who apply themselves to them to devote the fruits of their labours to you".
EXEMPLAIRE AUX ARMES DE LA MARQUISE DE MONTESSON (iron absent from OHR, which indicates a rare provenance). Daughter of the Marquis de La Haye de Riou, farmer-general, Charlotte-Jeanne married first in 1757 the Marquis de Montesson (1687-1769), lieutenant-general of the king's armies, and then contracted a secret morganatic marriage with the Duke Louis-Philippe d'Orléans, also widowed in 1759, grandson of the Regent and father of Philippe-Égalité. "She gave splendid parties at the Palais Royal, composing plays in which she played herself. Her works were printed in 1782" (Quentin-Bauchard, Les Femmes bibliophiles de France, Paris, Damascène Morgand, 1886, vol. II, p. 456, which cites the present copy).
Provenance: Joseph Techener bookshop (catalogue Description bibliographique des livres choisis, Paris, 1858, vol. II, no. 7973).
