Historical background:
Jacques-Porcien Harel, a pin trader in l'Aigle (Orne), added to his name that of his wife Marie Anne Françoise La Vertu. Their son Pierre also became a trader and then a shipowner.
He emigrated during the revolutionary troubles and settled as a banker in Amsterdam. It was there that he was approached by Calonne and became one of the purveyors of funds to the princes in exile, as well as a producer of forged assignats.
We would like to thank Mr Alban Pérès for his help in identifying the coat of arms.
