Francesco was the younger brother of Giacomo Casanova. In his day, he was one of the best-known painters of his generation, a reputation he won with great difficulty after a difficult apprenticeship in Francesco Guardi's studio, followed by a change of style when he became a pupil of Simonini. A pre-romantic painter, his reputation was such that Giacomo was recognised as the brother of the great painter, and his clients included the Prince de Condé and Catherine II of Russia. A dissolute life led him to squander his fortune and die in poverty.
