Jean DUCAYER (active in the 17th century), attributed to Presumed portraits of Marguerite de Lorraine (1615-1672) and Eléonore de Gonzague (1598-1655) Oil on canvas with lining hanging. 57 x 42 cm Old restorations Marguerite de Lorraine (1615-1672): Princess of the House of Lorraine, she married Gaston d'Orléans, brother of King Louis XIII, in 1632. Long opposed to the policies of Cardinal de Richelieu, she led a life marked by the intrigues of the French court. She was also the mother of the famous "Grande Mademoiselle", Anne-Marie-Louise d'Orléans. Eleonora Gonzaga (1598-1655): born into the princely Italian family of the Gonzagas of Mantua, she became Empress of the Holy Roman Empire when she married Emperor Ferdinand II in 1622. Known for her great piety and cultural influence at the Viennese court, she supported the arts, music and religious institutions during the Thirty Years' War.
