Description
A poetic and original carpet from TEHRAN (Iran) Circa 1940. Made from high-quality, silky lambswool pile on a cotton backing. An ivory field serves as a backdrop to a sublime tree of life, its branches curling into multicoloured, leafy and flowered scrolls. Within it, a multitude of colourful birds flit about; some serve as prey for reptiles, others devour fish, whilst busy parents feed their chicks, which are fidgeting in their nests. Two lions and two wading birds face two chimeras emerging from the tree’s roots. This allegory symbolises the struggle between good and evil. A wide marine-themed border featuring interlaced floral scrolls, where, once again, reptiles and birds clash. Opposite is a cream border featuring stylised florets. The outer braid features chess pieces in positive and negative designs. Poetic and sublime design. H_ 205 cm L_145 cm Good overall condition. - Expert: Frank KASSAPIAN
