Description
GHOUM silk carpet Iran. Mid-20th century Silk pile on a silk backing. A curious ivory mihrab, with a poly-lobed base and an upper section in the Mughal mandorla style, opens out through an arcade of four twisted columns onto trees of life and a vase of flowers from which delicate floral stems emerge. The ivory interior vault, adorned with plant motifs, supports a marine-coloured, multi-lobed floral medallion. The old-pink outer vaults are adorned with curling ivory foliage, whilst two upper spandrels featuring emerald and ivory arabesques with plant motifs, as well as two lower blooming corollas set upon a floral sown pattern with a pink ground, embellish the whole piece. The main old-gold border consists of a succession of emerald panels and ivory medallions adorned with multicoloured cruciform floral compositions. Four ivory and old-gold counter-borders featuring garlands of small flowers complete the frame. Highly original. H_169 cm W_113 cm - Expert: Frank KASSAPIAN
