Description
A very important and magnificent GHOUM silk carpet
Iran. Shah era, circa 1965.
Carpet formerly owned by Prince Abdallah Al Fayçal Bin Abdullaziz Al Saud (King of Saudi Arabia from 1964 to 1975).
The carpet was sold at the Ader Picard Tajan auction on 10 December 1988 at the Hôtel Georges V. (extract from the attached catalogue).
It was woven to order in the town of Ghum, featuring a Tehran design (the two towns are approximately 150 km apart).
Silk pile on a silk ground.
Density of 560,000 knots per square metre.
Set against a pinkish-beige field is a pattern comprising a multitude of medallions with ‘moulded’ old gold, multi-lobed frames. The medallions are ivory in colour and feature a multicoloured floral bouquet design. They are interspersed with ‘moulded’ interlacing patterns featuring floral ornamentation. Two antique gold counter-borders featuring a brick-patterned trellis with stylised ivory florets, highlighted by eight ivory and bluish bands adorned with garlands of flowers, frame the main border, a pinkish-beige border, adorned with undulating leafy branches supporting majestic ivory floral arrangements, standing out amidst polychrome flowering stems. An outer antique gold braid featuring chess pieces. An extremely rare ‘palace’ size and of the highest distinction.
